Classes and Workshops

Numbers in parentheses refer to the skill level of the students.  (Chart is located at the
end of this list.)  All class sessions are three hours unless otherwise noted.

These are the classes in my portfolio:  (Photos will be added very soon.)

1.  Blended Stars – This is a 46” square quilt or wallhanging.  The central motif is a
double star.  This is a scrap quilt and was developed by “In the Beginning” fabrics as a
showcase for their “blended” fabric line, but is a good basic pattern that will work with
other prints as well.  This is a three-session class.  (1+)

2.  Cat Wreath – a small wallhanging with a cat surrounded by a floral wreath.  This
project could also serve as the front of a pillow.  Requires book: “It’s Raining Cats and
Dogs” by Janet Kime.  This is a one or two-session class.  (1+)

3.  China Cabinet – This is a wallhanging that is composed of a pieced china cabinet that
contains bowls, plates, cups, candles, etc.  This is a paper-pieced project.  Requires book:
“Cups and Saucers”, by Maaike Bakker. This is a two or three session class.  (1+)

4.  Crazy Quilting – This is an introduction to Crazy quilting.  In this class, we will make
one crazy quilt block and learn a variety of decorative stitches.  One session. (1)

5.  Dragonfly Pincushion – In this workshop, we will make a lovely pincushion that
features a paper-pieced dragonfly block that can be embellished with beads and
embroidery.  One session.  (1)

6.  Easy Nine-Patch Quilt – This is a great beginning quilt.  Students will learn how to
make nine-patch blocks, set them on point, and combine them with a wonderful border
print or feature fabric.  Two or three sessions.  (1)

7.  Flannel Dogs – This class is always very popular with the students.  Using flannel or
cotton prints, we will make a quilt for a child or baby.  Can also be used as a
wallhanging.  Book required: “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs”, by Janet Kime.  Two or three
sessions.  (1+)

8.  Fractured Star – In one session, students will produce 9 to 12 quilt blocks.  In a
second session, we can add sashing and borders.  One or two sessions.  (1)

9.  Harmonic Convergence – Using the technique developed by Ricky Tims, the students
will create an exciting wallhanging.  Book or pattern required.  One or two sessions.  (2)

10.  I Spy – This is a scrap quilt that uses a wide variety of fabrics.  This is a wonderful
quilt for a child.  One to three sessions.  (1+)

11.  Introduction to Paper Foundation Piecing – In this class, the students will make three
blocks using the paper foundation piecing method.  Kits that include fabric and patterns
will be provided.  Bonus patterns are included.  (1)

12.  Introduction to Quiltmaking: 9 Patch – In this class, the students will make
traditional nine-patch units combined with unpieced blocks.  (This is a Single Irish Chain
quilt.)  Basic quilt-making techniques will be taught.  Three sessions.  (1)

13.  Introduction to Quiltmaking: Rail Fence – In this class, the students will make a Rail
Fence quilt.  Basic quilt-making techniques will be taught.  Three sessions.  (1)

14.  Introduction to Quiltmaking: Fences and Stars – In this class, the students will make
Friendship Star blocks that will be combined with Rail Fence blocks in an interesting
layout.  Basic quilt-making techniques will be taught.  Three sessions.  (1)

15.  Japanese Pinwheels – This is a wallhanging that features Asian fabrics in a pinwheel
design.  An interesting border effect is part of the design.  Two sessions.  (2)

16.  Little Red Schoolhouse Quilt – This is a traditional pattern using only two colors: red
and white.  This is a very nice looking wallhanging or can be used as a quilt for a child.  
Traditional piecing.  One or two sessions.  (1+)

17.  Machine Quilting (Beginning) – In this class, students will learn how to use the
walking foot and the free-motion foot on the sewing machine.  The class covers marking
tools, how to quilt without marking, use of stencils, tracing paper designs, and other
methods.  One session.  (1+)

18.  Mystery Quilt – In this 8-hour class, the students will work on a “mystery” quilt.  
This class is often scheduled as an “All Nighter”, which normally starts at 6 PM and ends
at 2 or 3 AM, depending on the students.  One session, 8 hours.  (1+)

19.  Needles and Notions – This project is a foundation paper-pieced wallhanging that
displays common sewing notions.  This one is a lot of fun and lends itself to
embellishment.  Book required: “Needles and Notions”, by Jaynette Huff.   Two to three
sessions.  (1+)

20.  Quilt Labels – The students will create three or more labels for their quilts.  
Techniques include piecing, stamping, and drawing.  In development: including photos on
the quilt labels.  One session.  (1)

21.  Scottie Dogs – Students will make a flock of Scottie dogs that are wearing plaid
jackets.  This is very cute.  The dog blocks are combined with pieced blocks in a “Country
Roads” pattern.  Book required: “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs”, by Janet Kime.  Two to
three sessions.  (2)

22.  Secret Stairways – This is a “Stack-n-Whack”™ pattern that creates a wonderful
three-dimensional effect.  Book required:  “Stack-n-Whack™”, by Bethany Reynolds.  
Three sessions.  (1+)

23.  Stack-n-Whack: Fans – This beautiful Fan quilt is made using the “Stack-n-Whack”™
method.  Book required:  “Stack-n-Whackier™”, by Bethany Reynolds, or the “Stack-n-
Whack” ™ Fan quilt plastic template. (1+)

24.  Stack-n-Whack: Pinwheels – This is a pinwheel quilt that is particularly wonderful
when made with active, bright fabrics.  Book required:  “Stack-n-Whack™”, by Bethany
Reynolds, or the “Stack-n-Whack” ™ plastic template. (1+)

25.  Stack-n-Whack™: Seven Sisters – This is a star quilt make using the “Stack-n-Whack”
™ method.  Book required:  “Stack-n-Whack”™, by Bethany Reynolds, or the “Stack-n-
Whack” ™ plastic template. (1+)

26.  Start Quilting – This class is based on the book, “Start Quilting”, by Alex Anderson.  
In four sessions, the students will learn the basic quiltmaking skills and complete a small
quilt.  The project may be a Rail Fence design or the Friendship Star design.  Book
required:  “Start Quilting”, by Alex Anderson.  Four sessions.  (1)

27.  Sunshine and Shadow – This is a traditional Amish quilt design made with squares of
solid fabrics.  It is very beautiful and is a good basic quilting class.  Two sessions.  (1)

28.  Table Runners – I teach a variety of table runner classes.  The easiest one can be
made in one session.  (1)

29.  Teapots – This is a wallhanging that features a variety of blocks: teapots, cups,
creamers, and sugar bowls.  This project uses the foundation paper piecing method.  One
to three sessions.  (1+)

30.  UFO’s – This is an open class that provides an opportunity for the students to get
help completing their quilt projects.  Sometimes called “Quilting Workshop”, or “Friday
Night Quilting”, etc.

Sessions:  Some classes can be completed in one session.  If the class is listed as “one to
three sessions”, for example, the patterns and methods can be taught in the first (or
only) class.  Additional sessions allow the students to complete their quilt top with the
instructor and get advice on layout, sashing, borders, etc.  Students usually prefer to
have the additional sessions.

Skill level description:
(1) – No previous sewing experience is required.
(1+) – Student is familiar with the sewing machine and can sew ¼” seams.
(2) – Intermediate – Has done some more complex patterns.
(3) – Advanced – Ready for anything.
